In  Hathayoga  Astakumbhakas (Eight diffrent types of  Kumbhakas ) are known as Pranayamas.  Pranayama is the yogic technique to bring the breathing into regularity, rhythm  and balance. Hathayoga Pranayama techniques utilise kumbhaka, breath retention, to establish control over the flow of prana, calming the mind and controlling the thought process.
